Awakening with the dawn one day, Zainab set off with her jar towards the canal. She walked down the path before the sky had barely paled, aware only of the ground immediately in front of her. Making her way through the fields, still resting beneath a blanket of dew, she advanced towards her destination as the darkness gradually retreated. When she arrived the canal was full of water, there being no irrigation work at present, and the fresh breeze caused small waves to ripple on the surface. Night stole away between the leaves of the great trees on the banks to be replaced by the light of the newborn day. She washed the vessel she had brought with her and filled it with water then leaned against a tree waiting for someone to help her lift it. She did not have to wait long, but the first passer-by only said ‘Hello’ and continued quickly on his way. Another, who was also in a hurry, called out ‘Good morning’ while a third, crossing the bridge with his cloak wrapped round him said nothing at all. But what was she doing all this time, not even calling for assistance? Had she fallen asleep where she stood, undisturbed by their greetings or was it laziness that had taken hold of her? None of these; Zainab was roaming in a fathomless sea, travelling far from this world to another where she could sense the joys of the past as if they were present, but her memories only accentuated the fears and apprehensions that now besieged her innocent soul.
